Discover the Mysteries of Bigfoot in Frank Giammanco’s Debut Novel!
Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, is a giant ape-like creature that some people believe roams North America. There is slim physical evidence that Bigfoot is out there. However, that doesn't deter alleged sightings of the wild man who rarely shows his face, or Bigfoot buffs from trying to prove there's life in the legend.
Frank Giammanco’s debut fantasy/fiction masterpiece, Lord of the Wood, is about two groups of people on their own, separate quests for Bigfoot, each with their particular end goals. On their journey, the two groups uncover many mysteries as they traverse the wilderness, and their adventures take on a life of their own. This one-of-a-kind reading experience is fast-paced and zany, making Lord of the Wood a truly enjoyable summer read.
Giammanco has a background as a business publisher and writer who also owned a publishing company. At one point he decided to combine his skills in publishing with his amazing writing talent, thus turning the page to become an author. He currently resides in northern New Jersey where he continues to write.
You’ve worked in various aspects of the publishing industry, when did you start writing fiction?
Believe it or not in elementary school—I wrote a Thanksgiving essay about a talking turkey and my teacher deemed me destined to be a professional writer—I couldn’t let her down. By high school, I was reading a lot of Hemingway, Vonnegut, and Kerouac, and became enthralled with them.
What drew you to write Lord of the Wood?
I was inspired to some degree by Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” in which the paranormal characters interact with everyday people, and are actually more normal than anticipated and also more surprising than expected.
How would you describe the book?
I think Lord of the Wood is a combination of whimsical fantasy and drama…with a silly, happy ending, and a few life lessons in the mix.
The Bigfoot myth goes back quite a long time, did you do much research before authoring the book? And if so, what information surprised you the most?
I’ve read many books and magazine articles about Bigfoot; What surprised me most? How sophisticated the creature has been described and how human.
What do you think fascinates people so much about Bigfoot?
I think the fascination with Bigfoot has so much to do with its elusiveness—it invites so much speculation about the notion that a hominid so closely related to homo sapiens could exist.
Do you believe such a creature could exist?
Sure, why wouldn’t I?
Quite a lot has been written about him, what do you think differentiates your book?
Much other fiction about Bigfoot portrays him as a dangerous, brutish beast. I attempted to make Bigfoot in many ways more human than humans; he speaks, reads, has witty insights, smokes cigars, and drinks beer. He’s a fun guy!
What would you like your readers to take away from reading the book?
Don’t take yourself so seriously; enjoy the fantasies of life.
Are you working on another novel?
Yes, I’ve taken the character of Emerald Nemi from this first novel and placed her in a new setting in New York City where she becomes embroiled in another very different paranormal investigation.
